Code of Conduct

This Code of Conduct are the rules that all members of 10BitWorks Makerspace agree to abide by while at the facility.

    1. Mutual Respect: Treat all members, staff, and guests with patience and courtesy. Value the time and effort of others, especially when they are sharing knowledge or offering help. Avoid condescending or dismissive communication.

    2. Acknowledge Boundaries: Be receptive if a member expresses a concern about your behavior or work practices. Respect personal space and individual working styles; some members may prefer to work independently.

    3. Harassment Policy: Intimidation, bullying, and harassment (including sexual harassment) will not be tolerated. Any threat of physical violence to persons or property will be grounds for dismissal or suspension.

    4. Community ownership: All member spaces should be maintained for the use of all members. No private appropriation of community goods. No hoarding.

    1. Safety First: Prioritize safety above all else. Do not take risks. If you are unsure about a course of action, ask another member or a board member for guidance.

    2. Tool Authorization: Only use tools you’re qualified and competent to operate. Seek help if you need it. Do not attempt repairs on equipment unless authorized and qualified. If you experience an injury using a tool, please contact 10bit board so that we may improve our safety training.

    3. Work Area Awareness: Pay attention to all equipment and moving parts around you. Never leave machines running unattended.

    4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE for the work you are doing, including eye and ear protection in designated areas.

    5. Footwear: Closed-toed shoes are required at all times (except for sanctioned events such as game nights, etc.)  in the makerspace. No high heels or open-toed shoes are allowed.

    6. Clothing and Jewelry: Secure loose clothing, long hair, and watches to prevent them from getting caught in machinery

    1. Any use of drugs or alcohol that endangers members or guests is prohibited.

    2. There is no smoking or vaping allowed indoors.

    3. No members shall use the property as a domicile.

    4. Do not eat or drink on or near the equipment in the space.

    1. Rule of thumb: Leave your work area cleaner than you found it.

    2. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the space clean.

    3. Tools should be as organized as possible. Put things back where you found them!

    4. Make sure to clean up any spills immediately and appropriately, as they are a hazard.

    5. Caustic and flammable materials MUST be marked as such and stored according to OSHA guidelines.

    6. Please take care of difficult to deal with trash and do not leave for others to clean up. Items that cannot fit in standard sized trash bins should be disposed of in the outside dumpster, or independently.

    7. If you leave a mess behind, you may be contacted to either return to clean it up, or asked to perform community service at the space at a later time.

    8. Budget time for clean-up during each visit to the makerspace.

    9. When leaving projects overnight: put it safely out of the way and leave a note with your name, the date it will be done, and your phone number.

    1. If a piece of equipment is broken, please unplug the machine and email broken@10bitworks.org immediately. Please do not attempt repairs unless you are certain the repair performed will leave the equipment as good, or better than before.

    2. Don’t take risks. If you are unsure about a course of action, ask another member.

    3. Do not leave machines running unattended.

    4. Do not attempt to stop running equipment with any part of your body. Use the power switch or unplug it.

    5. Familiarize and test emergency stop procedures of each machine before each use.

    6. Be aware of all equipment around you, especially moving parts.

    7. Check that all pieces and tooling are properly secured before operating equipment.

    8. Remove all chuck keys, wrenches, and other tools from the machinery after making adjustments.

    9. Work with a partner when appropriate–do not try to move heavy objects nor support heavy pieces by yourself.

    10. Pay attention to the machinery. Something that does not feel or sound right is likely not working right.

    11. Do not move any equipment from its designated place in the shop.

    1. Minors should be supervised at all times when in the Makerspace.

    2. Minors should use equipment only if an adult trained on the equipment will supervise.

    1. Most consumable items are your responsibility, but you are invited to make use of what is made available in the shop. (examples include sandpaper, hardware, glue, dust masks, etc.)

    2. When depleting large quantities of consumables, please consider replacing some or all of what you’ve used, or making a cash/check donation in a donation box.

    3. If a machine’s consumable (saw blade, drill bit, etc) is damaged from misuse you may be asked to contribute towards a replacement.

    4. If you set off the Sawstop brake, be happy, also you will be required to pay $160 for the brake and blade.

    1. Stow materials, tools, extension cords, and scrap appropriately. Do not pose a tripping hazard or put tools at risk of damage.

    2. Do not store anything inside or outside without permission. Anything left inside or outside without authorization will become community property and may be disposed of at will.

  • Our strength comes from our diverse community. We're a workspace where people of all backgrounds and abilities come together. To ensure this remains a welcoming space for everyone, please keep the following in mind when you interact with others:

    1. Be respectful of those around you; avoid language or actions that might reasonably make others uncomfortable.

    2. Intimidation, bullying, harassment, (including sexual harassment) will NOT be tolerated.

    3. If you are offering help to someone, please understand that some people prefer to work or learn on their own. Speak as if to an equal, and if your offer is declined, accept it gracefully.

    4. Be understanding if someone suggests that how you are working may present a safety concern; this is a community responsibility.

Communication is important in all communities. If someone is making you uncomfortable, point it out to them. If someone expresses a concern to you, please be receptive. If you need help, feel unsafe, or need to express a concern privately, please speak with one of our board members. They will assist, or connect you with the right person to help.  Reports of misconduct can optionally be filed (anonymously if chosen) with a Code of Conduct Incident Report Form.

    1. Notify staff via Slack of any problem with the facility, machines, or other members in the space as soon as you notice them.

    2. Classes and Events: Members are expected to be courteous when there are events taking place and not create excessive noise or inconvenience to attendees. Look at the calendar and plan noisy work around these events to help make people’s class experience the best.

    3. Volunteering: We encourage all members to give back to the community however they can, be it through taking time to clean an area, helping to maintain the equipment, or participating in our board meetings..

    4. Lost and Found: There is a shelf located to the right of the ceramics room for placing abandoned/lost projects or items. Items abandoned for 14 days may be disposed of.

    5. Visitors Welcome! Members are encouraged to bring in friends and family to give them a tour of the makerspace. A member bringing someone in is responsible for their safety, and must inform people they are not to touch the power tools.

    6. Donations of supplies/tools/materials to the shop must be made through the board. Things that show up out of nowhere will be put in the Lost and Found.

    7. If you are the last one to leave the Makerspace, shut off everything and lock up! The close-up procedure is posted near the entry/exit door. Closing the space includes powering off all tools and equipment, and shutting off the lights (except the one in the glassblowing area.)

    8. Members are required to adhere to our Late Payment Policy.

    9. Changes to the Code of Conduct may be made from time to time, with or without notice. By continuing your membership you agree to abide by any such changes.  It is your responsibility to stay up to date on the latest additions to our Code of Conduct.
