Your Guide to Getting Started
Your Hands-On Journey Starts Here:
What to Expect at 10Bitworks
Welcome to the community!
We're thrilled to have you. Our makerspace is designed for exploration, learning, and self-directed creation. While you'll find incredible tools and a supportive network of fellow makers, becoming proficient in an area often takes time, patience, and a "go-get-em" attitude. You'll gain independence in using machinery, master new skills, and troubleshoot challenges as you go. This journey of discovery is incredibly rewarding, and we're here to provide the environment for your success.
Things to keep in mind:
Self-Reliance is Key:
Our members are encouraged to learn how to operate equipment independently after training. Watch some videos, read some manuals, but if you get stuck, and aren’t confident in doing something without injury, or causing damage please check in with someone at the space who can help you! Just remember:
Learning is a Process:
Mastering tools and completing projects takes time and practice.Community Support, Not Constant Supervision:
Our members are generally quite happy to help and share knowledge, but direct, continuous one-on-one instruction isn't always available beyond formal classes.Safety First:
Safety is paramount. Independent operation requires adhering to our safety guidelines.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
We offer introductory classes and safety orientations for some of our equipment, and have area leads who can help you get started. In addition, community members also learn from each other. YouTube, product, and topic-based forums have also been proven to be great resources for learning new skills and overcoming learning curves for new users.
-
In most cases, members are expected to provide their own project materials. That said, we do often have extra, or scrap materials available.
-
Yes! in most areas there is storage available for project materials, we ask that you label those materials with your name and telephone number, and that you only store materials related to projects currently being worked on. Our policy on abandoned project tools and/or materials (left over two weeks without being worked on) is they become community property. Some exceptions apply in specific circumstances, but must be cleared with the board.
-
This is unfortunately not uncommon and happens more than anyone cares for. Ideally if something is broken at the fault of the member, we ask that person to be responsible for the damage caused. Please report any property damage immediately, so that we can assess the damage and plan for replacement or repair.

I imagine there are more questions. Let’s brainstorm this.
